One of the most important features of Impact Rolling Steel Targets is that they roll farther down-range after each successful shot. Unlike typical stationary steel targets that present the same shot over and over, our patent-pending rolling target design requires shooters to constantly adjust to the new position and range of the target. Because of this, we've seen many shooters post incredible improvements in both their effective rang, and in the accuracy and speed of follow-up shots.
One of my favorite shooting drills when I'm using Impact Rolling Steel Targets is called the "3 Position Drill". Aside from being incredibly fun, it's one of the best ways I've found to practice and extend my effective range from field shooting positions.
To begin, setup your Rolling Steel Target at the minimum safe shooting range (25 yards for rimfire targets, 100 yards for center-fire rifle targets. From the offhand position shoot 5 rounds at your target. In the beginning, hitting the target with most (if not all of your shots) should be relatively easy. As the target continues to roll farther down-range, hitting the target becomes progressively more difficult. When you can no longer hit the target with 3 out of the 5 shots, switch to shooting from sitting or kneeling.
Continue shooting in 5 shot groups from sitting or kneeling, when the target rolls far enough that you can no longer hit it with 3 of the 5 shots, switch to shooting from prone.
This drill is incredibly effective because it pushes you to your limits in all 3 major field shooting positions. Track your results by measuring both how far you can roll the target from each shooting position, and how far you roll it total. Within a relatively short period of time you should begin to see substantial improvement.
As always when shooting or handling firearms, take proper safety precautions such as wearing eye and ear protection, and always keep the barrel of the firearm pointed in a safe direction.
