At Impact Steel Targets we're always looking for new ways to make our time at the gun range funner and more challenging. Impact Rolling Steel Targets provide the best marksmanship training available in a steel target as well as being incredibly fun. Because of their patent-pending rolling target design, each successful shot rolls the target farther from the shooter. This helps shooting enthusiasts practice target acquisition and of course incrementally increases the difficulty of each shot. Now, how can we make using these steel targets even funner? By racing them down the shooting range!
You'll need two Rolling Steel Targets, a safe location to shoot at, and a buddy.
Setup both targets at least 25 yards from the firing line and establish a finish line downrange from the targets. We typically setup the finish line 15 yards behind the targets, but you can make the race as long or short as you'd like. Shorter races can usually be finished on one high capacity magazine while longer races may require several magazine changes.
After setting up, lock, load, and roll your target across the finish line faster than your buddy can.
Try racing your targets while using different shooting positions. On a recent trip to the gun range I easily won while shooting offhand, but had my tail kicked when we switched to sitting.
We had one customer tell us that they like to use three separate magazines in their Rolling Steel Target races. The first magazine they shoot offhand, the second from sitting or kneeling, and the third they shoot prone. This helps them become proficient at several different shooting positions and changing magazines under pressure.
As always, take proper safety precautions every time you go shooting. Wear eye and ear protection, shoot in a safe area with a bullet backstop, and always treating every firearm as if it were loaded.
