The most important part of any shooting session is always safe firearm handling practices. Always take proper saftey precautions such as wearing protective equipment (safety glasses, hearing protection, etc.), treating every gun as if it were loaded, and maintaining a safe distance from your target.
On impact with a steel plate, a bullet can fragment or tear off pieces of the target. Although unlikely, occasionally these fragments ricochet toward the shooter. Always stay at minimum 25 yards from steel targets with rimfire and center fire handgun targets, and 100 yards at minimum from center-fire rifle targets.
